What is a hospitalist?

A hospitalist is a physician, a physician assistant, or a nurse practitioner. This hospitalist specializes in caring for patients who have been admitted to the hospital. This provider works exclusively in the hospital setting to ensure that you receive the best and most thorough care possible while hospitalized. We do not see patients after they leave the hospital.

Will I have more than one hospitalist?

Depending on the number of days you are in the hospital, you may be seen by more than one hospitalist during your stay.

How do I get refills of medications prescribed by a hospitalist?

Please contact your primary care provider if you require a medication refill after being discharged from the hospital.

How do I speak with the hospitalist caring for my loved one?

To speak with your hospitalist while you or a family member is in the hospital, ask your nurse to page him or her. If your hospitalist is not on duty, another hospitalist will visit with you either in person or on the phone. Providing high quality healthcare and meeting your needs are important to our team.

Can I get an appointment with my hospitalist?

Hospitalists see patients only in the hospital. We do not have clinics to administer outpatient services, and therefore we do not schedule follow-up visits.

Does my doctor know you are seeing me?

Yes. The Inpatient Physician Associates has agreements with most primary care physicians in the area to assume care of their patients for hospital visits. A summary of your care is made available to your provider when you leave the hospital. This way, your provider can continue with your follow-up care after you return home. Many physicians in the community also have access to your records via the electronic medical record during your hospitalization and after you are discharged.

What if I need a hospitalist during the night or on the weekend?

A hospitalist is in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you need the hospitalist during the night, the nurse will call him or her for you.

Who will see me after I leave the hospital?

It’s very important to follow up with your primary care provider after being hospitalized to review your progress and continue management of your healthcare. A summary report of your care is sent to your provider.

What if I don’t have a doctor? Can I get an appointment with my hospitalist?

As hospitalists, we provide care for you while you are in the hospital as an inpatient. We specialize in providing care to patients during their hospital stay, and therefore we do not see patients after they leave the hospital. If you don’t have a doctor, the Bryan Health care managers will work with you to identify available providers and/or services so that you can receive the follow-up care you need after you leave the hospital.

Will I get a separate bill for hospitalist care?

Yes, you will receive a bill for your hospital charges, and a separate bill for the care that the hospitalist provided for you while you were in the hospital.
